Underground or Overground? How to Get Around London

London: a vast city famed for is ancient history, buzzing nightlife, rich mix of international culture, its food, the fog and its great big London Eye. Visitors wanting to make the most of their stay in Britain’s banging capital are going to have to find a way to get around, but there’s plenty of transport choices for the travelling tourist.

Unfortunately, walking won’t get you very far in London. The city stretches over 609 square miles and, unless you plan on visiting only a very small area, using your two legs alone just won’t suffice.

For fitness freaks, using a bike to get round can be an option. It’s clean, cheap and good for you, but you’ll have to contend with London drivers, heavily traffic and, quite possibly, heavy rain. There are certain areas of the city which are ideal for exploring by bike, such as the paths along the Thames river, the Canals, Lee Valley and of course London’s many parks, but as an overall transport solution for the causal tourist, only the fit and brave need apply.

If you don’t mind the rush hour crush and you can read a simple colour coded map, then London’s aptly named underground train system, ‘The Tube’, will take you to many of London landmarks. The system has recently been improved with the introduction of the ‘oyster card’ – a credit card like device to which you can add money and then use to travel throughout the underground system, simply swiping as you go. This system is not only convenient, but also offers significant savings compared to buying single journey and return paper tickets.

For those places that the tube doesn’t yet reach, (the tube network is far less extensive south of the river compared to north), the bus routes reach deep into almost every part of the sprawling city. The much loved traditional “route master” buses, which could be boarded or exited by jumping on or off from the ever-open rear door, have now been retired from service, but London’s buses live on in the form of a modern fleet that still celebrates the red Double Decker bus, which is a trademark of the city.

If you prefer your transport non-public, then the classic London black cab can be hailed at all hours and will whisk you away to anywhere you want to go. They’re convenient and cool, and you’ll get to talk to a real life London Cabbie – but it will cost you more than the bus or the tube. If you need a car for more than just a quick journey, then you can always get your own motor. Car rental in London isn’t as expensive as you might expect and cars can be booked in all London airports, as well as in dozens of rental outlets across the city.

Perhaps the best way to navigate around London is to use a combination of transport methods. London’s fleet of buses, cars, taxis and the tube will allow you access to everywhere in the city, bringing all the delights of the capital within reach of the travelling tourist.

The Best Way to find Undiscovered Britain ? Beautiful Country Walks

Keeping fit and healthy, both in mind and in body, is the best way to ensure that you get to work most days and avoid unwanted illnesses. As the old saying goes ‘prevention is better than cure’, so pursuing a healthy way to live means that you will be better prepared to fight off those unwelcome little bugs and viruses.

To help in that aim you don’t have to be an exercise addict that spends hours down the gym honing their bodies. For the vast majority keeping fit involves a sensible diet and moderate but regular exercise, and what better way to get that than by exploring Britain’s beautiful hidden countryside!

Many of the best parts of rural Britain and some of the most stunning views are accessible only by foot, and offer glimpses of a stunning undiscovered country. Tranquil, quiet and unfettered walking trails offer a chance to escape from the hurried pace of everyday life and to allow for a period of reflection. Depending upon personal preference there are many different types of walks; flat with only a few inclines or hilly walks that take in many steep ascents and descents offering spectacular vistas.

Fantastic country walks can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of the UK ranging from only a few miles to hundreds of miles long, such as the longest National Trail in the country – the Pennine Way. One of the North of England’s epic trails, the Pennine Way stretches south from Kirk Yetholm in Scotland through the Cheviots, North Pennines, Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and finally culminating at Edale in the Derbyshire Peak District; a distance of 256 miles. Along its entire length the views are spectacular and miles from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Amongst the many benefits of regularly walking and keeping fit and healthy is that health insurance is less likely to be called upon. Whether tackling the Pennine Way or just walking to the local shops rather than jumping into the car it is beneficial to both you and the environment as regular exercise, even if it is just walking helps keep you healthy. So, if the Pennine Way is too ambitious a target then there are plenty of alternatives. The East of England, particularly in Norfolk, offers flatter, shorter and gentler alternatives such as those contained within the Lee Valley Regional Park.

Other tranquil walks in the region include Peddars Way and Norfolk Coast Path, or further down the coast in the south-east region there are no less than 12 areas of outstanding natural beauty and all can be accessed by walking. And that is just the start! Throughout the entire UK there are many walks of equally outstanding beauty just waiting to be discovered!

Glorious Gardens of the Delightful Loire Valley in France

The Loire Valley in France is a superb delight for garden enthusiasts. Not only can you admire the spectacular chateaux and sample fine French cuisine and great Loire valley wine, tourists can also marvel at some amazing gardens. The whole valley is now a world heritage site listed by UNESCO.

Chateau Villandry is a gem and a must see for any one with a vegetable patch in need of some inspiration. Chateau Chaumont on the banks of the Loire River holds a spectacular international garden festival every summer. Peony and rose lovers should visit the botanical gardens at Orchaise west of Blois.

Chateau Villandry owes its fame to the exceptional terraced gardens which sit on three levels and include a water garden, an ornamental garden and an ornamental kitchen garden. Eight gardeners work at Chateau Villandry full time, and plant about 60,000 vegetables and 45,000 plants in its gardens each year. Villandry is a dynamic place, the site of many activities such as the “Vegetable Garden Days” in September, the summer festival, special exhibits and workshops with the gardeners from the chateau.

The gardens at Chateau Villandry are an imaginative twentieth century re-creation of a 16th century renaissance castle garden. The moated Chateau dates from 1536 and had a formal garden in the eighteenth century. The existing garden dates from the years after 1906 when it was purchased by a Spaniard, Dr Joachim Carvallo.

He purchased the property and poured an enormous amount of time, money and devotion into repairing the castle. Inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement, he wished the garden to have a sixteenth century character. He created what many people believe to be the most beautiful gardens anywhere in the world.

The gardens are split into several parts: a maze made from 1,200 beech trees, a kitchen garden with aromatic herbs and vegetables, an ornamental flower garden near the castle, a children’s garden with a play area, a water garden with a pond and a greenhouse garden.

An arbour of grape vines leads to a great parterre, designed as a Garden of Music. The Garden of Love is o nthe other side of the canal. Symbolising the moods of love, it looks rectangular from the chateau but is actually trapezoid. The love garden has its colourful flowers and heart-shaped box hedges laid out with square beds illustrating “Tragic Love”, “Fickle love”, “Tender Love” and “Insane Love”. There is also the beautiful water garden with its lawns and pool of water.

But the real treasure at Chateau Villandry is the ultimate vegetable garden. It is It is bordered by espaliered apple trees, drooping pear bushes and standard roses which symbolise the monks who once tended the first medieval vegetable gardens and laid out in nine squares. Villandry is a vegetal feast, with zigzags of crazy-growing leeks, blocks of autumn pumpkins, beds of yellow and green peppers, big purple cabbages and mounds of celery all replanted twice a year with a brilliant eye for the colours of the changing seasons.

In 1934, Chateau de Villandry was designated a monument historique. It is still owned by the Carvallo family, and open to the public. It is one of the most visited castles in France. In July afer dark the gardens are lit by over 2000 candles and this beautiful vision of the gardens is accompanied by baroque music played by musicians wandering throughout the gardens.

An international garden festival takes places every day during the entire summer, on the grounds of the Chateau de Chaumont. Gardeners from all over the world produce outstanding gardens around a central theme, using nature and art together to create the contemporary effects.

Lasting six months from late April to mid-October, some 25 gardens at Chateau de Chaumont take a different theme each year – from water, vegetables and weeds to more conceptual poetry. The Garden Festival at Chaumont drawing international teams of architects, artists and stage directors as well as gardeners and landscape designers.

The theme for the festival for 2007 is mobility. Last year it was play and most of the exhibits were highly interactive and a delight to the young and to the young at heart.

The botanic park at Orchaise boasts over 2,000 plant varieties from around the world ranging from water lilies to blooming cherries. It is especially well known for its beautiful array of peonies and roses.

The Loire Valley can not help to inspire gardeners. Even Mick Jagger gyrating lead singer of the Rolling Stones, is now garden enthusiast at his preferred second residence near Amboise. He got Alvilde Lees-Milne to lay out a marvellous formal walled garden at his 15th century chateau and he has now become completely part of the garden, knowing every single thing about all the plants, the flowers, and the way the fruit trees are espaliered.

Corina Clemence operates a luxury french chateau in the Loire Valley near Blois, for up to fifteen people perfect for family holidays and for touring vineyards and chateaux and relaxing.
